Stan Beppu

Stan Beppu, through his abstract painting, is exploring spatial relationships of intense color fields, with crisp lines over many layers of bold brush strokes. His paintings draw the eye into the inner depths of the varied levels of color and partially hidden dark recesses. He wants the viewer to explore the under strokes while looking through other patterns of color. As he describes the visual journey, “Life has many layers as we move through our space we integrate the visual fluidity at the outer edges of our vision”

Stan was born after his family had been released from Camp Manzanar (the Japanese prisoner of war camp in California). And like so many of his generation he was raised to be the all American boy - no Japanese language, history or culture. Yet underneath all the layers were the subtle nuances of the richness of his dual heritage. The simplicity of his complex layering of colors meld together two cultures that influenced his perceptions.

Stan did clay for many years and his clay pieces are in Museums and private collections throughout the United States and Japan. Though he painted for many years he did not begin showing his paintings, sculptures and etchings until 8 years ago.
