Sharon Swezey

Sharon Swezey

Sharon Swezey has been sitting in chairs since she could remember. First in high chairs, then kitchen table chairs. Comfy living room chairs were not far behind. Sitting obediently in school chairs was an important milestone in her young life. Sharon has been sitting in chairs ever since.

Sharon has also been an artist from the moment she was born although she lost her connection to creative source somewhere after sixth grade when she was forced to choose between art and foreign language as an elective in middle school. She chose foreign language because that’s what all her friends were doing; she wasn’t strong enough to be “different” back then. To this day, she regrets her decision especially after absolutely struggling with the ridiculousness of the French language. Oh, it’s beautiful alright but trés impossible!

Fast forward many years… with a degree combining psychology and sociology under her belt, Sharon found herself immersed in the world of graphics, interestingly enough. First came ten years in printing followed by another ten years in the world of the web. Yet commercial graphics (web or print) is not the same as being one’s own artist. The graphic product must reflect the client after all not oneself. Interesting in its own way but not necessarily for one's inner artist.

Cue major life upheaval that lead (among many new directions) to the The Artist’s Way, a 12-week course in creative recovery as facilitated locally by the great Ingrid Kincaid. Sharon is now proudly able to say for the first time in 30 years, “I am an artist”. The proof is in the chair, an homage to art, creativity, school years and France!
