Community Warehouse Seeks Artist for Rooftop Sculpture at NE Portland Location
Community Warehouse is commissioning a rooftop sculpture for our NE Portland space (3969 NE MLK Jr. Blvd) and would love to consider local artists for this opportunity. We have a budget of $8,000 for this project (including material costs) and are inviting artists to submit their qualifications for review. This project is made possible thanks to a Recycling Education and Outreach (REO) grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Submissions are due by May 31, 2025.
Art Opportunity
Our NE Portland building is in a highly visible location on the corner of NE MLK Jr Blvd and NE Shaver St. We want a sculpture that will transform the building into a neighborhood landmark, sparks conversation, and reflects the mission of Community Warehouse. Since our building houses both our Estate Store and our furniture bank, the sculpture’s design should represent both entities. Additionally, we seek a design that clearly conveys we are a community- and mission-driven organization that values reuse and sustainability, not just a furniture business.
The Building
Visibility on MLK is top priority. If the sculpture is to be in the corner, the design must accommodate the arch above the door.

Application
If you are interested in being considered for this project, please submit the following by May 31:
- A portfolio of relevant past work (website link or PDF preferred)
- A short artist statement (optional but encouraged)
- Contact information
From the submitted portfolios, we will invite 2–3 artists to develop a proposal, with a stipend of $300 provided for this phase. The final selection will be made based on artistic vision, feasibility, and alignment with Community Warehouse’s mission (bonus for use of reclaimed/salvaged materials!).
If you are interested, please reply to this email with your materials by March 30. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. We appreciate your time and look forward to seeing your work!

About Community Warehouse
Community Warehouse is the Portland area’s local furniture bank, helping families and individuals turn empty spaces into cozy homes for over 23 years. By partnering with over 200 local agencies, Community Warehouse supports neighbors overcoming homelessness, domestic violence, forced displacement, and other adversity by providing essential furniture and household items, helping them build stronger, brighter futures.
This work is made possible by the generosity of everyday people, through donations of gently-used mattresses, dressers, sofas, linens, dishware, microwaves, lamps, and more. Donors can drop off items at one of three convenient locations in NE Portland, Gresham, or Tigard, or may schedule a home pickup online.
The Estate Store, located in the same building as Community Warehouse’s NE Portland furniture bank, offers a unique selection of vintage, antique, and contemporary furniture for the public to shop. Every purchase from the store directly supports Community Warehouse’s mission to furnish homes for neighbors seeking the comfort and dignity of a furnished home.
